Buck's Battle" got a big boost from Peabody High boys track coach Fernando Braz and city councilor Dave Gravel, who ran the Philadelphia Marathon recently while Dave's wife Cathy Gravel and Tanners assistant basketball coach Jeannie Hallinan did the half marathon.
The team proudly wore "Buck's Battle" T-shirts and raised money for Eric Buckley to donate to charity. Buckley, an assistant principal at Peabody High, is battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
"It was a huge success on all levels," said Braz. "Cathy and Jeannie finished in 2 hours 11 minutes while Dave and I did the full marathon in 4 hours 57 minutes. The fundraising threshold goal is $10,000, and with the event (dinner/dance) at Our Lady of Fatima, we're confident that goal will be reached."
Buckley is feeling much better after getting a stem cell transplant this past summer. He and his wife Erin have three children. Since he was first diagnosed, he has undergone two stem cell transplants and chemotherapy.
"The doctors and nurses at Mass General where I am being treated are tremendous," said Buckley, an avid runner who went to St. John's Prep and Assumption College. He has completed eight Boston Marathons. "Some of them ran the half marathon in Salem and they raised money to get things for patients' rooms. I had a great radio in mine, and I want to donate the money my friends raised to help them out.
"I was blown away when they said they were going to run to raise money to go to charities. There is also going to be a bone marrow drive at the high school Dec. 10.
"It has been a heck of a roller coaster ride, but I am lucky. So many good people are helping out," Buckley said. "I'm getting great care; doctors at Mass General are the best."
